#68 “Understanding the Power in the Name of Jesus”
(We Have a Covenant Right to Use the Name of Jesus)

In that day you will no longer ask me anything.
I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask
in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name.
ask and you will receive, and you joy will be complete.
[John 16:23-24]
Amplified Bible (AMP)

This may come as a surprise to you, but do you know that God owes none of us a thing?  Oh I know we think that because He is God He is obligated to take care of us, but He is not. The truth of the matter is this when He created the heavens and the earth He provided us with everything we would ever need. But then there came the fall due to disobedience, and then God devised a plan to bring us back into right standing with Him and pay the penalty for our sins. (Genesis 3:15) “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shall bruise his heel.” This is why we have no legal rights what so ever when we are not in a covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. You can’t come to Him in prayer and say “In Jesus Name” if you have not been redeemed by the blood of Jesus.  Because this is what gives us the legal right to approach God and stand before Him in righteousness because, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Christ cancelled our debt through His death on the cross, paying the ransom for our sins and giving us back our legal right to be called the children of God. “But as many as received Him to them He gave the power to become the sons of God, even to those that believed on His name.” (John 1:12) Through this redemptive act Christ not only won us back but He also won back our right to have dominion upon this earth. Through Him we now have our legal right to rule this earth and walk in our God given authority over this earth. Therefore the relationship we can now have with the Father is a Covenant relationship which gives us “Covenantal Authority” through Christ. “but the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs, “the priests of Israel” as the covenant of which He is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is funded on a better promises.” (Hebrews 8:6)

Now we no longer need a natural priest to communicate with God, because Jesus is our “Great High Priest” forever. Jesus has given us authority and access directly to the throne of grace which is based on a new covenant sealed by His blood.  Jesus while speaking with His disciples said at least seven times that as we follow Him we are giving legal rights to use The Name of Jesus when speaking with God. “In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask  in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. ask and you will receive, and you joy will be complete. Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. No, the Father Himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. (John 16:23-27)

This is why when we pray in Jesus name there is strength and power in our prayers. Why? Because when we pray we pray based on the authority of our relationship of our covenantal relationship with Him and the Father. Christ is Lord over a new covenant based on the redemptive work of the cross.  The name of Jesus gives us a legal right and authoritythat is valid no matter what we’re dealing with, be it “heavenly” things God or ruling powers in the heavenliest or dealing with “earthly” things such as natural man, but goes beyond even the “underneath the earth” such as dealing with kingdom of darkness (Satan).

The name of Jesus is your legal authority to conduct spiritual business with the Father, “for there is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all menthe testimony given in its proper time.” (I Timothy 2: 5-6)

My Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to better understand what it means to be in a covenant relationship with you and your son Jesus Christ. We thank you for your love towards us and for Your many blessings even though You are not obligated to us but for the work of Christ Jesus on Calvary’s cross.  Through His shed blood we now have right standing with You and free access to Your throne of grace. Teach us the ways of Your status that we might walk in them all the days of our lives. We ask You for understanding and wisdom as to how to keep Your laws that we might observe them with our whole hearts. We pray these things in Jesus name. Amen!!!
