#72 “Great Intercessor of the Bible
(Elijah - My God is Jehovah)

Lord God, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today let it be known
that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that at
Your word I have done all these things."
(1 Kings 18:36)
Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Elijah one of the major prophets of the bible was also one of the great biblical intercessors. Elijah has came to confront Ahab because of his wickedness in worshiping the foreign gods of  his wife Jezebel.  Ahab son of Omri became king over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of Judah’s King Asa; Ahab son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria 22 years. But Ahab son of Omri did what was evil in the Lord’s sight more than all who were before him. Then, as if following the sin of Jeroboam son of Nebat were a trivial matter, he married Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and then proceeded to serve Baal and worship him. He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he had built in Samaria. Ahab also made an Asherah pole. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him. (1 Kings 18:36)

God sent Elijah to Ahab with the word of the Lord, As the Lord God of Israel lives, I stand before Him, and there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!” The judgment of the Lord was that He would shut up the heavens and there would be not rain or dew upon the earth for a span of three years.  Why was God doing this? He was doing this in order to reveal Himself to the people and turn them back to worshiping Him; because  they has followed Ahab and was worshiping Baal. The people were breaking the first commandment, “You must worship no other gods, for the LORD, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you, You shall not bow down to them or worship them.” (Exodus 34:14)

Also God wanted to show His great power before the people in order to let them know how pointless it was to worship these false god’s which they had made with their own hands.  Now Elijah helps to drive home a very valuable lesson in intercession, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” Because of Elijah’s relationship with the Lord God, His prayers were answered by God and it did not rain or even release dew in the morning upon the face of the earth for three years.  What amazes me about this is that this was before Christ and the release of the Holy Spirit. It would appear that God has always needed mankind’s agreement here on earth in order for Him to do what He willed.

Elijah gave the prophets of Baal a chance to call upon their god, to see if he would answer, how after many hours Baal still had not manifested, nor was he going to. How often do people rely on false gods believing that they have the power to deliver them? How many times have they cried out during the night to manmade gods only to have no reply; yet, “They that call on the name of the Lord will be delivered.” Is now and has always been the response for those calling on Jehovah God, the true and living God; however, Baal did not answer the over 400 prophets which worshiped and served in his temple.

Now when Elijah prayed, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, prove today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant. Prove that I have done all this at your command. O Lord, answer me! Answer me so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God and that you have brought them back to yourself. Immediately the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust. It even licked up all the water in the trench!  And when all the people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried out, “The Lord—he is God! Yes, the Lord is God!  And the Lord God Answered Elijah’s prayer, with fire in a great demonstration of His awesome power!!

Elijah walked in the office of prophet but he was also a might intercessor before the Lord, just like Elijah we to have power and authority before the Lord God, when we stand in agreement with the will of heaven here on earth. This same great power to like Elijah can enable us to stretch out our faith over the dead and see God breathe the breath of life back into their body; just as it did for the son of the widow at Zarephath.

My Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You that as we pray fervently and effectually You will not only hear but you will answer. We ask you to breathe life into every dead and lifeless situation in the lives of the body of Christ and revive them; bring them back to life, just as you did the son of the widow of Zarephath. Father God show Yourself might in power and might, when we call upon Your Name, expose every false gods for who they truly are ‘no gods’ open the eyes of your people to see the truth and return to You, the only true and living God! In Jesus name we pray Amen!!!

Have A Bless Day…Go in God’s Peace!
