#78 “Great
Intercessors of the Bible”
Zipporah -
Little Bird)
“Zipporah took a flint knife
and cut off her son’s foreskin, and touched
Moses’
member with it. She said, “Oh! You’re a
bridegroom
of blood to me!” Then God let Moses go.”
(Exodus 4:24-26)
The Message
(MSG)
Once
again as a reminder, what does it mean to be an intercessor? “An intercessor is one who exposes
themselves for the protection of something or someone; in order to make defense
against any assailing danger.” They stand in the gap so to speak between two entities; for
instance in a court of law are in defense of a life before God. In today lesson
we will cover another Great Intercessor of the Bible named “Zipporah” the wife of Moses.” You might
be wondering what Zipporah did that would warrant being included in the list of great
intercessors? Well for one thing she saved the life of Moses, by standing in
the gap between him and God when God would have killed him. “On the journey back, as they
camped for the night, God
met Moses and would have killed…” On the way back to Moses and his family
had camped for the night; as they were settling down God met Moses there and
was going to kill him. Now scripture does not say what or why God was going to
kill him but one would deduce that perhaps it had something to do with Moses’
son not being circumcised.
Nevertheless God
was going to kill Moses and his wife Zipporah quickly circumcised her son and
touch Moses leg below his genitals with the foreskin. “…but Zipporah took a flint knife and cut off her son’s foreskin, and
touched Moses’ member with it.” And straight way God released Moses for the grip of
death which held him. Although there are
many questions left unanswered in this passage the fact which does not go
unanswered is Zipporah stood in the gap between God and Moses to prevent God
from killing her husband. Her concluding
remarks would indicate that perhaps it was she who had cause this evil to
befall her husband by her refusal to allow their son to be circumcised at the
proper time.
According to
the book of Genesis “Circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and
that will be the sign of the covenant between myself and you." (Genesis 17:11) The divine
instructions said to circumcise all males of his household on the 8th day after
birth. Although this is not a
subject most of us would like to cover there is a very valid lesson to be
learned here for both Moses and us as intercessors. There is no exception to
the rules where God is concerned! When God gives us instruction they must be
followed to the letter or we put ourselves in harm’s way for our disobedience.
For Moses, God
was getting ready to place him in leadership over His inheritance the children
of Israel and there could be no doubt that he, Moses would do exactly what God
instructed him concerning his people. Not even to keep the peace with his wife
Zipporah. Both Moses and Zipporah learned a valuable lesson that night…God has
the final word on every matter. God know that, if Moses could not stand up to
his wife; neither, would he be able to stand up to Pharaoh or the children of
Israel. “God got angry with Moses: “Don’t you have a brother, Aaron the Levite?
He’s good with words, I know he is. He speaks very well. In fact, at this very
moment he’s on his way to meet you. When he sees you he’s going to be glad.
You’ll speak to him and tell him what to say. I’ll be right there with you as
you speak and with him as he speaks, teaching you step by step. He will speak
to the people for you. He’ll act as your mouth, but you’ll decide what comes
out of it. Now take this staff in your hand; you’ll use it to do the signs.”
God told Moser that Aaron would his mouth, but that he Moser would God
to Pharaoh as he told him what God had said. Now we can clearly see why this
event in the way had to take place, it was to insure that when Moses spoke for
God he would do it exactly as God had instructed him. So to must we, even if
what we hear God saying doesn’t makes sense to us we must relay His words
exactly. God cannot use us if we are
going to be disobedient to His word and will. Your obedience could be the
difference between life or death for someone else; just as Zipporah were for
her husband Moses.
My
Prayer: Father God, today we are reminded of the word which says, “Obedience is better than sacrifice,” because when
we are obedient there will be no need for sacrifice. Father you told Moses that
You would be with he and Aaron that You would be right with them whenever they
had to speak teaching them step by step; father be with us as well teach us
step by step of the way lead us into all truth.
We surrender our will to Yours and commit our way to You keep us in the
plain path. Father let us not be afraid of anyone when it comes to speaking
your word and truth, help us to honor you first before any other person. We thank
you for your grace and mercy in Jesus’ name we pray Amen!!!
