#89 “Great
Intercessors of the Bible”
(Abraham - Father of Many)
“God continued,
“The cries of the victims in
Sodom and Gomorrah are
deafening;
the sin of those cities is
immense.
I’m going down to see for
myself,
see if what they’re doing
is as bad as it sounds."
(Genesis 18:20-33)
The Message (MSG)
Now that you understand the role of an intercessor let’s
take a look at some great bible intercessor. Many of us are familiar with Jesus as we have
talked about His role as our High Priest and Intercessor; however He was not
the only great intercessor in the bible. Over the next several weeks we will be
taking a closer look at these amazing biblical intercessors. What I have come to realize is that many
people who are powerful intercessors, just don’t realize who they are, yet they
are walking in the role of an intercessor just the same. It is my hope that while covering these
biblical intercessors you will see even yourself and begin to see how the Lord has
been using you as well.
We will start this series off with one of my favorite
that is Abraham. You may
recall how the Lord God called Abram and told him to leave his father’s house
and his relatives and go to a place which He the Lord would show him. “God told Abram: “Leave your country, your family, and your father’s
home for a land that I will show you. I’ll make you a great nation and bless you. I’ll make you famous; you’ll be a
blessing. I’ll bless those who bless you; those who curse you I’ll curse. All
the families of the Earth will be blessed through you.
So Abram left just as God said, and Lot left with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when
he left Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot with him, along
with all the possessions and people they had gotten in Haran, and set out for
the land of Canaan and arrived safe and sound.” Genesis
12:1-6 (MSG)
Now Abram had taken his nephew Lot along with him and in a
way was being disobedient because the Lord told him to leave his father’s house
and his relatives. But Abram felt an obligation to Lot his brother’s son,
because his father Abram’s brother was dead. So the Lord permitted him to take
Lot along. Abram’s disobedience later became a source of trouble for Abram;
because, on a number of occasions Abram had to intervene on the behalf of Lot
to save his live. Tonight we will deal
with one of those instances, of intervention.
The men set out for Sodom, but Abraham
stood in God’s path, blocking his
way. Abraham confronted him, “Are you serious? Are you planning on getting rid
of the good people right along with the bad? What if there are fifty decent
people left in the city; will you lump the good with the bad and get rid of the
lot? Wouldn’t you spare the city for the sake of those fifty innocents? I can’t
believe you’d do that, kill off the good and the bad alike as if there were no
difference between them. Doesn’t the Judge of the entire Earth judge with
justice?” God
said, “If I find fifty decent people in the city of Sodom, I’ll spare the place
just for them.” Abraham came
back, “Do I, a mere mortal made from a handful of dirt, dare open my mouth
again to my Master? What if the fifty fall short by five—would you destroy the
city because of those missing five?”
He said, “I won’t destroy it if there are
forty-five.” Abraham spoke up again, “What if you only find forty?” “Neither
will I destroy it if for forty.” He said, “Master, don’t be irritated with me,
but what if only thirty are found?”, “No, I won’t do it if I find thirty.” He
pushed on, “I know I’m trying your patience, Master, but how about for twenty?”
“I won’t destroy it for twenty.” He wouldn’t quit, “Don’t get angry,
Master—this is the last time. What if you only come up with ten?”, “For the
sake of only ten, I won’t destroy the city.” When God finished talking with Abraham, he left. And Abraham went
home." (Genesis 18:22-32)
Let me say that many of us would not have ventured to press
God quite as hard as Abraham however when so many lives are at stake one will
press further than normal, especially if one of your loved ones live in the affected
area. Yes, Abraham was concerned about the lost souls in Sodom and Gomorrah but
he was more concerned about Lot’s safety and that of Lot’s family. As intercessor’s
we must know the heart of God concerning man, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count
slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish,
but that all should come to repentance.” Abraham knew that the Lord was not swift to
exact judgment upon mankind, and if He had come all the way down to earth to
see what was going on within these two cities, you must know it was not His
judgment which brought Him down. This is
why Abraham could press God so regarding these two cities, he know that God was
looking for an excuse to relent.
God
assured Abraham that if there were five righteous people; between, the two of
these towns He would not destroy them. However He could not find any save Lot,
his wife and two daughters, only one shy of the number which would stay the
execution. When there is something you
are praying for and the situation is grave you must not relent in asking the
Father to intervene an save and deliver just as Abraham did, even if it is with
fear (reverence) and trembling, before the Lord.
My Prayer:
heavenly Father, have mercy upon us your people and this world around us. Give us
the hearts of true intercessor so that like Abraham we would even dare to press
you further on behalf of the souls which are dying daily. Deliver their souls
from destruction, turn them for their wicked ways save them from their sins. We
pray in Jesus’ name Amen!!!
Have A Bless Day…Go in
